District 32 Meeting Minutes

The meeting was opened with the Serenity Prayer, AA Preamble, Traditions and Responsibility Statement

January Birthdays:

Justin 1 year, Greg 2 years, Otto 17 years

DCM - Mike G.

Mike asked for all GSRs to check the email list as it came around the room with the sign-up sheet to ensure that all information is correct for each group.  Mike attended the January quarterly in Vancouver, Washington where Dave T. addressed the staple removal motion. The motion was presented to GSO and the motion was not pursued for various reasons. Mike also reported that they finished the area inventory at the quarterly meeting. They went through each District position. There was also discussion at the quarterly about technology outpacing anonymity (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Intergroup and GSO are low on funds. District 32 contributions in 2008 were $132,000 and 2009 was $80,000- quite a drastic shortfall.  Please bring this information to your groups for consideration. Please take a flyer for the pre-conference on March 28th. This is the time to communicate your wants to the Delegate.  Also, two GSR schools are coming up in our area – Kirkland February 20th and Seattle January 30th.  Mike recommends GSR school as a positive move for your service position. Donnie has to step down as Alternate DCM.  Mike will need an alternate – hopefully prior to July so that this person can attend the quarterly as Mike will be on a personal vacation.  Mike has lanyards for those who requested them.  A motion was made to accept Mike’s report and the motion passed.

Alt. DCM Donnie – Per Mike, Donnie has had to step down due to his work schedule conflicts.

A nomination was made by Mike M. for BOB H. as Alternate DCM. Bob is available and talked about his current and past service positions to qualify himself for this position.  A motion was made to approve Bob H. as the new Alternate DCM and the motion passed.

Secretary Kelly C.G.

Kelly thanks Mike G. for taking the October minutes in her absence. A motion was made to approve the October minutes and the motion passed. Kelly will update the Trusted Servants Needed flyer for District 32 to be placed on the website and distributed throughout meetings in our district. Matt V. volunteered to make color copies at no charge to the group.  Kelly’s report was accepted.

Webmaster – Wayne O.

Wayne posted new schedules on the website in Word and PDF format.   He also posted the Burien Little Assembly flyer.  Keep an eye out for new flyers on the District 32 website.  Wayne is happy to have his computer up and running and will be updating the site more regularly.  A motion was made to accept Wayne’s report and the motion   passed.

Treasurer - Dan P.

The Treasurer’s report passed at the meeting is for the period ending December 2009.  Beginning balance is $2925.05 with a beginning Pink Can balance of $189.88.  Monthly group contributions were $146.67 and Pink Can contributions were $8.00.  Expenses were $382.79.  The ending balance of $2696.93 less Pink Can of $197.88 and prudent reserve of $1000.00 leaves an ending available balance of $1499.05.    Next month  Dan will be working with a new format that will include each Committee Chairperson’s budget detail.  He will use the form he received from Wayne as a template for all future Treasurer reports.  A motion was made to accept the report and the motion passed...

Grapevine Literature –  Bob H.

The special in Grapevine is extended. Now is the time to purchase the Grapevine for your group with this $14.00 savings.  A motion was made to accept Bob’s report and the motion passed.

Corrections Dan B.

Dan has been a little out of the loop since he is unable to make monthly Corrections meetings due to his schedule. He has been attending the monthly meeting at the SCC facility and that is going well. A motion was made to accept Dan’s report and the motion passed.

Archivist Open Position

Alternate Archives Chair Position - Donna

Donna is present at the meeting and has offered to fill the role of Alternate Archivist to help with upcoming events.  The Archives quarterly is February 6th at Renton Highlands, the Miracle Hall anniversary is coming up next month and the 75th Anniversary of AA is coming up in June.  Donna has previous archives experience with the District and values the importance of carrying the message of our history. She is unable to carry the load herself and cannot step up as Archivist, but is willing to work with Mike or other interested trusted servants until the Archivist position is filled.

CPC  Matt V.

Matt met with Jean Paul to go over all of the CPC materials that Jean Paul has collected during his time as CPC Chair.  Matt will begin working with Jean Paul on upcoming programs in the schools. Matt will be attending the quarterly on February 13th hopes to get more ideas for CPC duties.  A motion was made to accept Matt’s report and it passed.

Mike did speak with Rick from District 33 and will set a date for a committee planning meeting.  We still need to secure a venue for the event which will need to accommodate approx. 700 people.  Jordan is still working on connecting with Emerald Downs about their space availability.

BURIEN LITTLE ASSEMBLY: If you are interested in volunteering with the Burien Little Assembly on March 13th Mike could use some help with set up. It is a great event and is very service oriented.

NEW BUSINESS:

Mike G. would like to know if we are interested in an Area Chairperson coming to our meeting to talk about a specific position in detail. (e.g., Archives, Treasurer, CPC, Accessibility, etc.)

We need a Chairperson for the District 32 picnic to be held in July.

We received a BRIDGE for a woman in Auburn.  Theresa took the bridge.

GSR Reports:

Three new GSRs are present at tonight’s meeting.  Greg – Friday Night Live, Jason - Monday Night One Way meeting and Harrell taking over Brown Bag for Nancy due to her new work schedule. Welcome new GSRs!!

Eliza  FINALLY FREE New group at Saint Lukes on Monday nights at 7 pm -312th and 5th.  Open meeting with childcare and an Alanon meeting attached. The Alanon meeting is a new addition in the past couple of months.  Attendance was down but it is building again. Solid core group and they are now in the schedule book!  They are discussing a split contribution. It’s a relatively new meeting but it’s going strong and has some long term sobriety. There are lots of younger people regularly attending also.  They are planning to have a picnic this summer.

Jordan – Federal Way Tuesday Night Step Study 8:00-9:30  They break into 3 rooms and always have a 1st step and a big book study. Birthdays are the last Tuesday of the month. The meeting still needs money. The group has recently created two new committees; one to look into the possibility of moving the meeting and the other to work with current location on lowering the rent. Attendance has been down.

Mike M SOS at Nine Lakes Baptist Church/ Sat. @ 8pm

Lost another home group member this month, mostly because he had trouble grasping the 12th tradition. We have had other members leave due to personalities over principals. This leaves us looking for an alternate GSR again.  Someone thought it would be a good idea if we had Steps and

Traditions window shades and the group agreed, but the person authorized to purchase them was the one who quit ??  My rotation will be up soon. I look forward to being a “younger statesman”.

Lynn S. – Auburn Group – Several strong meetings at this location.  Lynn represents all meetings as GSR. The Monday, Wednesday and Friday meetings are very large and split into three groups.

The meeting has been around for 46 years and is a strong, solid group. Check us out in the schedule book and join us.

Greg  Friday Night Live

This group has not had a GSR for a long time.  Usually 35-40 people attend the meetings. The group is doing well.  Contributions are good.  Greg is grateful to be sober and represent his home group.

Bob O. –  Federal Way Men’s Stag Thursday night

The bank had overcharged the group and was refunded some money. The meeting is powerful and attendance is strong.  Several members participated in Menucha (sp?) Men’s Retreat and shared that it was a great experience.  Birthday meeting end of the month.  They will be renewing their rental agreement with the church, although rent will be increasing.

Otto  Renton Early Birds – every morning 6:30 / Sunday 7:00

Business meeting is 3rd Saturday and the Birthday meeting is the 4th Saturday. They have rotating 12 x 12 and Tradition studies and on Sunday’s they go through the Big Book.  Between 12 and 20 steady members.  They have a Gratitude breakfast in June and December which is well attended. George  The Alternate GSR for this group also attended the meeting to see how it works”.

James - Solid Sobriety   Sunday a.m. at Golden Steer

LIPS (Literature in Prisons) contributions are down for January. They have chosen a date for their summer picnic July 31st. James brought candy to

Matt V. for CPC events.

Bob W. – Anonymity Group Wed. in Federal Way on S. 296th at 51st

A fairly small meeting with 15-20 attendees. They study Big Book, 12 x 12 and have a birthday meeting on the last Wed. of the month. They lost their most senior member, Paul J., on January 11,

2010. One week after his 40 year sobriety birthday.  He was 85 years old. Bob noticed that the meeting address is wrong on the schedule and gave the correction to Wayne O.

Justin Federal Way Sunday Step

Across from Decatur at the Lutheran Church.  Usually about 50 attendees. A lot of strong home group members. They recently increased their monthly rent for the church because they felt it was the right thing to do.  Their group was also asked to consider contributing an extra dollar or two whenever possible.  The business meeting first of the month and Birthday meeting last of the month. Newcomers are encouraged to fill service positions and this works out well.

Dan  Auburn Alkees, Sundays at 7:30pm

An older meeting in Auburn with a strong core of members and good sobriety. Group has gotten back on track with contributions to the Area and Pink Can.  They have started to organize their anniversary dinner to take place in February and have already begun planning for their camping trip at Game

Farm park in August.  Reservations need to happen early to secure space.

Harrell   Brown Bag @ noon M-F

Average 30-50 attendees. Business meeting is first Thursday of the month and Birthday is last Thursday. Harrell is taking over for Nancy as GSR.

Kelly C.G. Wed. Night Women In Recovery

We have a great open meeting on 300th and Military Rd. It’s a smaller, more intimate meeting with 20-25 regular attendees.  Kelly passed out a flyer for the group’s quarterly speaker/potluck meeting on February 17th .  Potluck at 6:30 and two speakers beginning at 7:30.  All women are invited.

Tony –  Evergreen Breakfast meeting at Auburn Eagles

This is a huge meeting… Last Sunday there were over 100 people in attendance. There is a wide range of sobriety 1 day to 44 years.  There is no breakfast so many of the attendees go to breakfast after the meeting.

Theresa White River Group

The meeting grew a lot last year and is holding at about 50 people.  All is good!  The birthday meeting is the last Thursday of each month. They voted to send the money they had collected for an ASL Interpreter to GSO.

Jason – Monday Night One Way

A good, smaller meeting that has kept Jason sober. He is happy to be part of it.

2013 Area Assembly.  Mike has been talking with Districts 18 and 33 and is planning to start up a checking account for costs associated with the Area Assembly. A separate checking account will help to keep it simple for accounting purposes. The separate account will help to control and manage costs, especially since there are 3 districts involved.  Mike and Jordan are still looking at venues in the area to facilitate 700-800 people. Jordan has contacted Showare Center, but seating minimum is 2,300, which is too large. Weyerhauser suggested King county Aquatics Center but that is not large enough. He is still waiting for a call from Emerald Downs, but is worried about max. capacity at Emerald Downs being 700. Jordan is trying to focus on venues to hold 800 people. March Draft
March 15, 2010 District 32 Meeting Minutes
The meeting was opened with the Serenity Prayer, AA Preamble, Traditions and Responsibility Statement
March Birthdays: Mike G. – 7 years on St. Patrick’s Day!
Welcome New GSRs: Mark, Tuesday Men’s Stag Auburn and Al, Rainbow Recovery Thursday night

DCM - Mike G. Mike thanks all the people who volunteered at the Burien Little Assembly. Special thanks to those who served on panels. Anonymity group was a big help with set up and panels. They had a large turnout and used up all the supplies. Mike survived his year as BLA Alternate Chair and is excited to see what next year brings. The church has requested that we have a 1 million dollar liability policy and we must present them with a certificate of insurance if we want to continue our monthly meetings here. Mike has been researching guidelines for AA insurance – GSO cannot help with the insurance issue. AA groups are autonomous and not subsidiaries. Some groups may consult an attorney about the liability matter. It is estimated that it would be approximately $300.00 per year for a liability policy. We are paid through April so if we choose to vacate it will be effective May 1st. Mike will inform us about the insurance cost and we will vote at the next meeting. GSRs please take flyers for the pre-conference on March 28th - if you are a GSR you should plan on attending the pre-conference to express your group’s conscience. The pre-conference is the time to inform our delegate, Dave Tully, about our position on issues that he will take back to GSO. District 32 has been chosen to address question #1; Discuss Correctional Facilities sponsorship agreements and other volunteer paperwork and agreements. (Corrections Committee Agenda items B,C,D & E) Mike asked for assistance from Dan B. and Bob H. A motion was made to accept Mike’s report and the motion passed.

Beginning balance was $2831.43, Pink Can Balance $467.19, monthly group contributions were $286.48, and monthly Pink Can contributions were $25.77. There were no expenses and prudent reserve is $1,000.00 leaving an available ending balance of $1450.72. Dan asked permission at the Assembly for his corrections facility pamphlet to be posted on the web, and they inquired as to why we would want to post such information. The pamphlet simply lists each institution and was meant to be used as a reference tool for those interested in carrying the message. Dan replied to their question and will further address his request at the April quarterly. A motion was made to accept Dan’s report and the motion passed.

CPC – Jean Paul for Matt V. Matt will be speaking to the Federal Way Rotary about AA and alcoholism. They had a two day panel at Bellarmine Preparatory High School at the end of February. Some of the kids came up and talked to them afterwards and somebody inquired about Alanon. They have a date set for West Auburn and Jean Paul is invited to attend the Federal Way School District health awareness committee – teachers from Truman, Thomas Jefferson and Federal Way High School will be present. Other business – Mike G.: 2013 Area Assembly. Mike is still considering the Kent Commons as a possible venue for the 2013 Assembly. There is also a new convention center going up in Kent that we may consider. Mike and Jordan are still looking at venues in the area to facilitate 700-800 people. We may also look outside our area for options. Jordan would like contact information for the new events center in Kent but has been unable to find anything so far. Please bring any ideas for a venue to the next meeting.

Bridge Program – Susie mentions that she received a call to bridge a released female prisoner. Susie was unavailable, but was told that she was the only person signed up to bridge in the Auburn/Federal Way area. Those interested in serving should have their own car and at least one year of sobriety. Susie suggests that all of us consider serving the Bridge program. It is not hard and is a great way to carry the message. Kelly will scan the BRIDGE form for Wayne to post on the District 32 website for easy access.

District 32 Picnic: Jordan is the Chair of the Picnic Committee and has booked July 18th at Brooklake Community Church on 356th and Pac. Hwy. Attendance is fine, but I can't see us functioning much longer as a group without some new members as we don't allow anyone who's not a home group member to hold a position in the group. What a mess! Hope to have better news next month.

The meeting was opened with the Serenity Prayer, AA Preamble, Traditions and Responsibility Statement

April Birthdays: Teresa – 9 years TODAY!!

DCM - Mike G. It’s been a fun month. March 21st attended wrap up meeting for Burien Little Assembly. #1 on the correction list for next year was maintenance of the women’s bathroom. District 32 is hosting next year. Mike will stay on to help lead the group, but will need to recruit a lot of help. He attended the March 22 pre-conference where he did the Corrections presentation for PREA. April 9-10 Bob and Mike attended the WWA 72 Quarterly in Port Angeles. While there, they attended a PI/CPC workshop, treasury meeting/update and more. Mike was tasked to get a group conscience regarding “in an effort to fully be informed Dist. 54 so moves that each appointed standing committee member be allotted 5 minutes in lieu of 3 minutes at the Area Assembly”. This will add 16 minutes to the meeting. All those present agreed that this would be feasible. A motion was made to accept Mike’s report and the motion passed.
